“The way to resolve the prisoners of war issue is very clear: all negotiations must cease, especially ones relating to territorial issues. Then we must say that we will enter the next phase when the issue of prisoners of war is resolved. Even if they consider the prisoners of war to be terrorists, they can pardon the prisoners and release them. That depends on policy,” the former Minister of Justice, Gevorg Danielyan, said at the Zartonk national-Christian initiative’s press conference-seminar regarding the unresolved issue surrounding the prisoners of war.
According to the former official, the legal-political culture in Armenia does not give us the opportunity to work better. Anti-democratic laws are being passed that are being represented using phrases that appeal to the people. “If you pass a law that violates the independence of the courts, or, for example, if you tie the changes in the Constitutional Court to investments, what else can that be besides populism?” he said.
