Lines in front of museums, no place to sit in coffee shops: the Gyumri phenomenon

April 19,2021 12:15

Despite the coronavirus and the tense situation following the war, Gyumri remains one of the most attractive towns in Armenia.

This colorful city is full of visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. There are tour buses everywhere, and people visit from different cities throughout the country, especially the capital, and from other countries, especially Russia.

We even came across people from China this weekend.

We also noticed that there was nowhere to sit in the town’s central coffee shops, and there have been huge lines in front of the museums all weekend (see the thumbnail, lines in front of the Mher Mkrtchyan Museum).

Tour guides were mainly escorting schoolchildren to Gyumri, where they presented the town’s historical buildings.

However, it is important to mention that the town’s history is not always accurately presented. There is a lot of room to think about how, for example, the Gyumri restaurant building on Shirak Street, which is also known as the “Good Morning” building and where parts of Albert Mkrtchyan’s “Happy Bus” movie were filmed, is presented as a sauna building.
