A minute of silence in memory of Cheryl Gillan
At the opening of its spring session, the Assembly held a minute of silence in memory of Cheryl Gillan, “a great European and a most appreciated colleague who left us on 5 April,” PACE President Rik Daems stressed in his opening speech.
“Dame Cheryl was a tireless champion of democracy, and a bright and remarkable member of the British delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 2013. She was also a member of the Bureau of the Assembly and Vice-Chair of the European Conservatives Group and Democratic Alliance, and Chairperson of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy. She was a committed defender of democracy, the rule of law and human rights, but also an inspirational woman for us all, a compassionate and caring colleague and dear companion with a great sense of humour. Cheryl will be sorely missed by all of us.“
