Aside from painful memories, we should have proud memories

April 26,2021 10:33

The tribute and commemoration of the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide in Syunik started on the evening of April 23.

The ARF Kapan Aram Manukyan committee organized a torchlight procession to Baghaburj, where the genocide memorial is located.

On the morning of April 24th, the flow of people not only to Kapan, but also to the memorials and monuments in all the communities of the region did not stop. The staff of the Syunik provincial administration led by Deputy Governor Narek Babayan, mayor of Kapan Gevorg Parsyan with his staff, as well as students, soldiers, and others paid their respects to the memory of the genocide victims.

After the flower laying ceremonies at the memorial, the spiritual pastor of Kapan conducted a spiritual liturgy.

The pantheon for fallen freedom fighters is located next to the memorial for the victims of the genocide in Kapan. Those who fell during all of the Artsakh wars are buried here.

The vice principal of the regional college in Syunik, historian Vrezh Badalyan said that this fact has its meaning: we must remember our heroic battles along with our painful memory to prevent the genocide from ever happening again.

“The years 1915-1923 are known within Armenian national history as the painful years. Those painful years are when the Mets Yeghern took place. Pain has its memory, and today we are paying respects to the memory of our ancestors. If we forget that memory, those painful years will happen again.

It is interesting that the victims of the Genocide and the victims of modern heroic battles are buried here. This suggests that when we have heroic battles, the genocide will never repeat itself. I would like for us to have proud memories aside from painful ones because we have boys who, at the cost of their lives, did not allow a new genocide to take place,” Vrezh Badalyan said.

Candle-lighting ceremonies also took place in the Syunik Province on the evening of April 24th.
