“Different circles you are aware of try to present us as being pro-Turkish. In this context, the attitude of the majority of parliament and the government towards the Armenian Genocide in general is being put into question,” said Nikol Pashinyan, the candidate for Prime Minister, during the discussion on the issue of electing a Prime Minister at a special session of the National Assembly on Monday.
He began to present facts in order to prove that they are not pro-Turkish. He said that nine resolutions were signed between 2018 and 2021 recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide. Twenty similar resolutions were signed between 2008 and 2018. One of the turning points in the international recognition of the genocide took place; both houses of the United States Congress recognized the Armenian Genocide, and it was also eventually recognized by the President of the United States.
Pashinyan assured that if they didn’t want this to happen, it wouldn’t have. “Those who accuse us of being pro-Turkish once tried to convince American authorities to not recognize the genocide. Now, they are accusing us of being pro-Turkish. Now, there is the issue of whether or not Turks are our enemies. Yes, that is not determined based on anyone’s statements; it is a historical fact. We are saying something else. We are saying that this animosity must be controlled. We are clearly going on that route. That animosity cannot be demonstrated in uncontrollable ways.”
