Piero Fassino concerned about sharp rise in violence between Israelis and Palestinians

May 13,2021 12:55

“I am deeply concerned about the sharp increase in violence between Israelis and Palestinians,” said Piero Fassino (Italy, SOC), PACE rapporteur on Recent developments in Libya and the Middle East: what consequences for Europe?

“We must avoid at all costs that the situation degenerates further. I therefore call on all parties to refrain from any unilateral action and urgently resume a genuine dialogue in order to move towards a viable, comprehensive and just settlement of the Middle East conflict, based on internationally recognised principles, including the relevant United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, which should result in a two-state solution. I also call on the Middle East Quartet to begin a process for ending the use of arms and violence by all parties to the conflict.”

“The Parliamentary Assembly stands ready to promote dialogue and confidence-building between the representatives of the Knesset and the Palestinian National Council, who benefit from, respectively, observer and partner for democracy status with PACE, in particular in the framework of the Sub-Committee on the Middle East and the Arab World,” he concluded.

The Sub-Committee on the Middle East and the Arab World held an exchange of views today on “Prospects for peace after the elections in Israel and Palestine”, with the participation of Haim Assaraf, Israeli Ambassador to the international organisations in France, and Bernard Sabella, Chairman of the Palestinian Partner for Democracy delegation to PACE.
