Former President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan’s nephew, Hayk Sargsyan, was acquitted by the court. Hayk Sargsyan was acquitted of possessing illegal weapons and ammunition and the accusation of attempted murder, which was requalified under the article of causing grievous bodily harm by negligence and applied to the statute of limitations. Hayk Sargsyan was accused of attempting to assassinate Davit Simonyan and illegally acquiring and possessing firearms and ammunition. Serzh Sargsyan’s brother Alexander Sargsyan’s son was involved in a criminal case in connection with an incident that took place 11 years ago.
On April 1, 2007, David Simonyan, a resident of Yerevan, born in 1984, was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound from the intersection of Tumanyan and Nalbandyan streets in Yerevan. Then A. Ghevondyan turned himself in to the police. Ghevondyan handed over a pistol and said that he had found it near the kindergarten near their building, and after being careless with it, he shot his friend, David Simonyan.
Thus, the criminal case initiated on that fact was terminated about 2 months later due to the lack of reconciliation or complaint of the parties. However, on July 3rd of last year, due to newly emerged circumstances, the Prosecutor General sought to resume the preliminary investigation of the case. As a result, it turned out that Davit Simonyan received a gunshot wound 11 years ago, due to a shot fired by Hayk Sargsyan, not A. Ghevondyan.
