They talk about human rights in the UN when it is beneficial to them. This message was presented to the Deputy Coordinator of the UN Office in Armenia, Denise Sumpf, by members of the Armenian Women’s Initiative and the Assembly of Refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR.
The Assembly of Refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR recently carried out several protests near different embassies in Armenia, demanding that steps be taken to stop Turkey’s genocidal policies towards Armenians on Armenian soil. The Armenian Women’s Initiative started an international petition on the same issue that would be sent to the UN.
The coordinator of the Assembly of Refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR, Mariam Avagyan, presented Aravot Daily with some of the details from their meeting. In particular, the women demanded that the UN carry out mechanisms for the release of Armenian soldiers held captive in Azerbaijan. During their meeting, they also discussed the parallels between the genocidal acts committed by Turkey and Azerbaijan against Armenians at the beginning of the last century in 1915-1923, then in 1988-1992, and then in 2016-2020, proving that the Armenian people today are, in fact, held captive in the territory of Armenia. “We said that the Turks are focused on the final eradication of the Armenians, but they were able to destroy other people from the Greater Near East, including Yezidis, Arabs, Talysh, and Lezgins. We asked them why Russia was not punished for endangering Fahraddin Abbaszadeh’s life, “kidnapping” him, and killing him in a Baku prison, and for “circulating” Navalny’s case? It is because Russia is pursuing the protection of Turkish interests, which smell of oil money,” Mariam Avagyan said. Armenian women have also accused the international community of turning a blind eye to the Armenian genocide in Sumgait at the end of the last century, which became the basis for the continuation of Turkish activities.
The official from the UN Office in Armenia promised that she would record the details of the meeting and present the issues raised by the Armenian women to the UN headquarters.
