The 12-month price growth in the Armenian consumer market in May 2021 increased 5.9% compared to May 2020.
On Friday, the Statistical Committee published the consumer price index for the first five months of this year. According to it, in May of this year, compared to April, a 0.4% deflation was registered, but in the first five months of this year, as compared to the same period of the previous year, the inflation increased 5.5%.
The one-year inflation in the food and non-alcoholic beverage market was 7.5%, and there was 1.0% deflation in May 2021 compared to April. According to the Statistical Committee’s publication, the 7.0-1.3% deflation of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, cheese, and eggs (the prices of all products together) greatly contributed to this. For example, in the vegetable product group in May 2021, 6.3% inflation was registered compared to May 2020, and 7.0% deflation was registered compared to April 2021.
For tobacco products in the consumer market, again the one-year inflation rate was 8.7%. Inflation in the same product market in the first five months of this year, compared to the first five months of last year, was 9.2%. According to the Statistical Committee, the twelve-month inflation of transport in Armenia was 11.7%, and in May compared to April, it was 0.3%.

In one year, the price of fruit rose by 0.4%, and in May, compared to April, the price of fruit fell. The deflation rate was 4.3%. In May of this year, as compared to May of the previous year, the inflation in the product group of dairy products, cheese, and eggs made 11.5%, in May, compared to April, 1.3% deflation was registered. In May of this year, as compared to May of the previous year, the price of meat products increased by 5.3%, and in May of this year, as compared to April, the inflation made 0.9%.
The one-year inflation in the sugar commodity market was 43.3%, with a 1.9% increase in May compared to April. In the product group of oils and fats, 33.4% inflation was registered in a year, with 3.6% inflation compared to April. The average inflation of sunflower vegetable oil taken separately in May, compared to May of the previous year, was 84.4%, and in May, compared to April, it was 6.0%.
Inflation of fish and seafood in May this year, compared to May last year, was 14.4%, and 4.8% compared to April. The average inflation rate of alcoholic beverages this May, as compared to the previous May, reached 8.7%, and 0.7% compared to April, and the 12-month inflation of tobacco products reached 8.7%, and 1.5% compared to April.
According to the Statistical Committee, the inflation of non-food products in May of this year was 9.0% compared to May 2020. In May 2021, compared to May of the previous year, the inflation of gasoline was 49.6%, and diesel fuel was 38.3%. The price of gasoline in May of this year increased by 3.0% compared to April, and the price of diesel fuel increased by 5.4%.
