‘We do not have to ask Azerbaijan anything from our territory’: Artak Davtyan on having Russian peacekeepers in Gegharkunik

June 22,2021 14:00

The chief of the General Staff, Artak Davtyan, confirmed the Gegharkunik governor’s statement that Russian peacekeepers must be deployed at the border, and the troops must withdraw as Nikol Pashinyan said during a briefing with reporters. Artak Davtyan noted that there is no final decision, and negotiations are underway. “It is not only the desire of one side; other sides are also participating. It will be as you said, but we will speak further about the final timeframe and implementation techniques.”

In response to the question of whether the Azeri side already agreed for him to say this confidently, Artak Davtyan responded, “We do not have to ask Azerbaijan anything from our territory. However, negotiations are taking place with the sides because there are some issues. Our goal is to have the Azeri subdivisions withdraw from the border without clashes, and we must implement measures all throughout our territory. We are working with the Russian side if necessary.” Davtyan said that he is only referring to Russian peacekeepers. The deployment of other nations’ peacekeepers has not been discussed.
