“I will try to make what I have to say understandable. The issue of the return of POWs is not only one for their relatives, Armenia, the PACE delegation, the majority of parliament, or even the state. Instead, it is for all Armenians and the civilized world. We allowed ourselves to make one mistake on that issue,” a member of the Armenian delegation to PACE and My Step deputy Hovhannes Igityan told reporters during a briefing in parliament. He noted, “I am not saying this as an accusation.
We do not believe that we used the potential of all Armenians. There should have been protests in front of all Azerbaijani embassies today. I understand that we can close Demirchyan Street in Armenia for political purposes, but the world should have felt that problem every day. Only in that case would the issue have turned into one for the international community. Unfortunately, political views also spread across several diaspora structures during the elections, and they were more so involved in political issues instead of Armenian ones.”
My Step deputy Sos Avetisyan also expressed the opinion that using the issue of Armenian POWs in an inner political agenda is not beneficial. Regarding the trial against Armenian POWs in Baku and the willingness of the RA Chamber of Advocates to provide assistance, Sos Avetisyan said, “I do not believe that we should participate in the trials because they are for show. Azerbaijan is carrying out these trials to show its society something. If we participate in those trials, it can make those absurd sentences legitimate. If they say that it’s a show and we send lawyers, what results is that we accept that it’s a trial.”
