During a press conference at the Tesaket press club, political scientist and director of the Caucasus Institute, Alexander Iskandaryan, noted that the Republic of Armenia is currently facing the following issues: borders, stability, and communications. “These issues will move forward with the mediation or pressure of Russia, and we will see how all this will develop in the near future,” the political scientist said. Then, he added that before that, we should wait for the decisions of the Constitutional Court, and the formation of the National Assembly and the new government.
In response to a question of whether or not it is the right practice to give maps of minefields in exchange for POWs, Alexander Iskandaryan responded, “What do you mean by the right practice? That is what is possible to do today. Azerbaijan has taken this factor hostage and bargained for it, demanding some exchanges. And they succeed in that because there are no other means. Armenia does not have the resources to directly influence Azerbaijan, and the indirect means of pressure are political formats. It is true that some people from Europe and the United States say to Azerbaijan, ‘Oh, that’s bad,’ which is not sufficient, so there is a process that we are witnessing. I would very much like to be wrong, but that process will continue for a long time, even months, if not years.”
