Zangezur: The internal and external

July 17,2021 13:10

Two days ago, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev made more, in my opinion, impudent threats against Armenia. Speaking in Baku during the ceremony for distributing apartments to the participants of the last war, he reiterated that the whole of east and west Zangezur, as well as Sevan and Yerevan, are the historical lands of the Azerbaijanis, where they, the Azerbaijanis, will definitely return, and it is necessary to prepare for a new war. On the other hand, according to Aliyev, there is no territory in Azerbaijan called “Nagorno-Karabakh” and, consequently, there is no such problem.

The intentions to destroy the Armenian state and drive us out of here, of course, are not new. What is more troubling is our internal social atmosphere, when the pro-government electorate (more than 600,000 citizens) is not interested in either our losses or the real threat hanging over our heads, which they do not seem to take seriously, or they have reconciled with reality and future losses. The conventional position of the Armenian authorities not only against these slanders, but also against the advance of the enemy forces in the direction of Yeraskh, as a result of which we have casualties, is also surprising.

The acting Prime Minister, who does not spare colorful expressions to flog “internal enemies,” is limited to general diplomatic wording in this case. It is difficult to expect Pashinyan to go “live” after the President of Azerbaijan’s speech and speak about “cutting off Aliyev’s hands,” “grabbing him by the neck,” and “laying him on the asphalt.” This vocabulary is used in domestic life to “morally crush” political opponents and thus, inspire the ruling electorate. And it indirectly contributes to the greedy behavior of our real enemies.

The name “Zangezur” has recently been mentioned in another context. NSS officers broke into the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine and wreaked havoc there. The action is carried out within the framework of post-election revenge, as I would like to remind you that Pashinyan was not received with open arms in the Syunik province. A number of community leaders in the Syunik province are being persecuted as part of that revenge, or, to put it more bluntly, the steel mandate and the dictatorship of law. I hope the courts, which, unlike the prosecutor’s office, the NSS, and the SIS, are not in Pashinyan’s pocket, will have their say in those cases. But it is obvious that all these measures weaken the security of the province and, consequently, of the whole state. Once again, I hope that all this is done unintentionally.
