Azerbaijan fired shots toward Sotk mine, employees evacuated

July 26,2021 16:22

The Ministry of Defense of Armenia informed that subdivisions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces fired at Armenian positions in the Gegharkunik portion of the Armenia-Azerbaijan line of contact using different caliber firearms on July 26th. There are reports that shots were also fired in the direction of the Sotk gold mine. A part of the mine remained in Karvachar, which was handed over to Azerbaijan as a result of the November 9th agreement.

Aravot Daily spoke to Ruzanna Grigoryan, the official representative of Geopromining Gold, the Armenian company operating the Sotk gold mine.

  • Grigoryan, please inform us about what took place near the mine. Did anyone get hurt?

As we know, a portion of the border passes through the territory of the Sotk mine. Irregular shots were fired near the mine last night. The mine was temporarily closed and the employees were evacuated. Their safety was ensured. At that time, 150 people were working. No one was injured. In the morning, everything was calm, and the mine resumed work as usual.

  • Was this the only incident from the Azerbaijani side in the recent period?

The northern border is rather large, but I can only speak about the portion that passes through the Sotk territory. Shots were heard from far away, and the media wrote about that several times. I am referring to Geghamasar and Kut. But this was the first time anything happened along the portion that passes through the mine.

  • Is the mine only working partially now?

No, it is working in its entirety in the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
