“Vladimir Vardanyan’s professional activities were impressive, but they were subordinate to the current political situation,” Armenia alliance deputy Artsvik Minasyan said during the discussion of Vladimir Vardanyan’s candidacy for the chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal affairs at the National Assembly sitting called by the Civil Contract faction. According to him, during the previous National Assembly, the committee headed by Vardanyan did not respond properly to the legal problems and violations. According to Minasyan, the illegal actions of detaining people for political views were connected with the spheres of legislative regulation, which were under the powers of the commission. “Zero response, zero behavior. Have you done anything, or will you do anything? The outrageous cases of political resonance were packed with legal processes, while they had nothing to do with the law, or moreover, with justice. After all this, it is not right to expect that we should express ourselves positively. At least we should have understood from your words that there were mistakes and shortcomings.”
Aram Vardevanyan from the Armenia alliance asked about the actions Vardanyan had taken as the chairman of the committee so that the disgraceful actions of blocking the courts would not take place in Armenia. “International human rights organizations have always criticized that fact.” In response to the accusations and criticism, Vladimir Vardanyan urged his colleagues to study his biography, scientific activities, and his efforts toward Armenian Genocide recognition, which, according to him, have not always been appreciated before.
Opposition deputies also accused Vardanyan of failing to assess violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms during martial law. In response, Vladimir Vardanyan said that he was in favor of imposing tougher restrictions. “It was harsh, it was unacceptable for me to see ‘fakes’ wishing defeat upon my own state during the war. I saw it with my own eyes. I saw the malicious people who were wandering about happily on November 9.”
