‘Syunik is being beheaded’: Vahe Hakobyan on Goris deputy mayors’ arrest

August 17,2021 17:44

“The political persecution of our teammates continues,” Vahe Hakobyan, a member of the Armenia alliance faction, told Aravot Daily, in reference to the arrest of Goris deputy mayors Menua Hovsepyan and Irina Yolyan. Vahe Hakobyan considered the accusations against them- large-scale embezzlement by abuse of official authority- to be fabricated and ridiculous. Menua Hovsepyan is also accused of electoral bribery.  According to Vahe Hakobyan, by arresting the deputy mayors of Goris, they will also try to pressure Arush Arushanyan to “accept something.”

“This government continues the language of blackmail.” Arush Arushanyan was also arrested. He was accused of providing social assistance, which is considered an electoral bribe by the government. Thus, according to Vahe Hakobyan, “Syunik has been beheaded.” In response to the question of if there any solutions to the issues, as Nikol Pashinyan recently spoke at the government session about speeding up the demarcation efforts, and some time ago there was talk of signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan in September, and recently Ilham Aliyev spoke about Armenia’s recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, Vahe Hakobyan said,  “I can expect everything from this government. Everyone can sign a document behind our backs. They have already done it once.”
