Alen Simonyan calls ombudsman’s data quoted by Anna Mkrtchyan on torture of Armenian prisoners “fabricated scenes”

September 15,2021 12:30

Anna Mkrtchyan, a member of the I Have Honor alliance, spoke at the NA plenary session on Tuesday that Nikol Pashinyan had recently said Armenian POWs would forgive us if they stayed in Azerbaijan for one or two more months. Then, Mkrtchyan presented details on the conditions in which the Armenian prisoners of war were kept in Azerbaijan. This data was recently published by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia and sent to international structures, and the deputy was reading those details.

When Anna Mkrtchyan finished her speech and left the podium, the following statement was heard from the ruling faction: “Parents complain that such things…” It is noteworthy that Speaker Alen Simonyan said, “I also did not understand why those fabricated scenes were mentioned in the National Assembly.”

Anna Mkrtchyan answered from her place, but she could not be heard, and Alen Simonyan in his turn answered, “Read a book, you will understand.” Shortly afterwards, Civil Contract deputy Narek Ghahramanyan said,  “Honestly, I did not understand why Ms. Mkrtchyan was describing in detail what happened to our POWs in Baku. Most likely, she does not communicate with the relatives of the POWs and those who returned. On behalf of the POWs and their relatives, I ask that their name be manipulated as little as possible, especially the conditions of detention, because it hinders the process of their return.”

In the briefing with the journalists after the sitting, Anna Mkrtchyan, responding to the question related to Alen Simonyan, said, “Not only do they not deal with the issue of prisoners, but they are also irritated by the fact that the Human Rights Defender was able to present the full picture of the torture of Armenians in Baku prisons.”
