Two days ago, historian and former diplomat Jirayr Liparityan gave an interview to Aravot. Not all of his statements are truths of the upper instance, and they can not be discussed or criticized. On the contrary, the expert himself said that the ideas he put forward need to be clarified and corrected. Two important steps need to be taken in connection with that interview and the author’s other publications. First, listen to them or read them instead of saying when you see Liparityan’s picture or read the headline, “Well, all the Levon supporters say that we should hand over Karabakh and live well.” Second, listen and read without prejudice or propaganda clichés. I agree that it is very difficult for 90% of Internet users.
First, let me bring an example from another field. I am asked about why I believe that being vaccinated against coronavirus does not protect against infection, but it will reduce the risk of severe infection several times? I answer that the problem is not whether I believe it or not. The problem is dry statistics around the world and the probability models built on it (a whole science). Yes, these statistics summarize the data for about a year. Statistics may change in ten years. But at the moment, we do not have data that contradicts this claim. You can make some emotional speeches on this topic – Bill Gates, chips, Judaism, but that will not change the fact. Why shouldn’t we show the same coldness in recognizing Artsakh’s independence? Because it touches our national feelings more? Has there been a state in these 30 years that has recognized the independence of Nagorno Karabakh? It did not happen, everything happened at the level of states, cities, territories, and other administrative units. And these were purely symbolic steps, just like the statements of the mayor of Paris. What does it mean to say, “Soon, soon they will recognize it?” Quite simply, it means engaging in self-deception. If this is a campaign aimed at an internal audience, it’s nothing. But if that is the conviction of politicians and diplomats, it is already a problem.
With this small example I want to show what methodology Liparityan offers in the most painful issues for Armenia. There is nothing technically complicated in this methodology – do not engage in self-deception, and that’s it. Psychologically, yes, it is difficult. It is easier to think about desires.
