“In order to make use of opportunities and face the challenges, the Republic of Armenia must make sovereign decisions,” said Ruben Mehrabyan, political scientist and vice-chairman of the For the Republic party, during an event organized by the “Armenian Center for Democracy and Security” today.
According to him, despite the efforts of some to instill in society that Armenia is incapable of sovereign existence and independence, and that democracy is a very bad thing, the ability of sovereign decisions is conditioned by three things: independence, democracy and security. “Our independence and sovereignty have no alternative and can not be a subject of discussion or bargaining,” said Ruben Mehrabyan.

The leader of the “For the Republic” party Arman Babajanyan, who was also present at the discussion, said that he did not have the impression that the West and Iran were against the “Zangezur Corridor.” Mr. Babajanyan reminded that in Key West, the idea of exchanging territories and a corridor in general was proposed by the West- the United States. “Armenia agreed to that option in Key West and at that time, Russia opposed it, and it was not implemented due to Russia’s efforts.” Arman Babajanyan said that during the meeting with the US ambassador, he asked the ambassador if she could use the example of her French counterpart to state that the United States is against the corridor, but, according to Arman Babajanyan, the ambassador gave everything except a direct answer. “Therefore, we can not say for sure that if such a scenario is imposed on us, the United States will not allow its implementation.”
According to him, as for Iran’s behavior, it was noticed in the four-day war of 2016 when Iran not only did not take a neutral position, but was also pro-Azerbaijani. “We tried to condition it with the reformist government established there, where the Azerbaijanis were more influential, and we will hope that yes, the changes in Iran, which took place with the arrival of the conservatives, can significantly improve relations between Iran and Armenia because relations developed during the conservative regime.”
