The traditional “You’re stupid” style dialogue

October 29,2021 12:00

As it is known, during each sitting of the National Assembly, a procedure called “NA-Government Questions and Answers” is planned. The deputies ask questions and the members of government answer. But asking a question, as it is written in any journalism textbook, aims to reveal some additional information, to find out the other person’s position. If I ask, “Do you not think that you are a scoundrel?”, it is not really a question. It is an accusation with a question mark that has only one purpose – to say the word “scoundrel.” Because it is assumed that there are almost no people in the world and there are absolutely no officials and politicians who consider themselves scoundrels. Thus, the answer to the question is known in advance.

And here, the “questions and answers” of the last few months are so similar that proponents of conspiracy theories may suspect that the government and opposition agree to play the same theater. The scheme is approximately as follows. The opposition says (formulating it as a question) “you betrayed, you sold it, you handed it over,” and the government counters (in response) “you sold, betrayed, and handed it over,” leading the debate with the “You’re stupid’ primitive logic.

At the same time, the opposition deputies refer to the events that took place during this government, as well as the current miserable situation in the country. And there are accusations from the ruling camp about alleged crimes that have yet to be proven by the court, as well as details of the negotiation process, some of which I do not think are accurate. In particular, as far as I know, no open document says that the Armenian armed forces should have left Shushi and Hadrut. And, of course, the main argument of the government is that Robert Kocharyan is rich, and that is a really powerful argument in terms of influencing public opinion. It has been mentioned many times that Kocharyan being the leader of the opposition “Armenia” alliance makes the deputies of that faction vulnerable.

Thus, the government is telling the truth about corruption, but in my opinion, the only or even the main reason for defeat is the attempt to declare corruption. In addition, the government distorts the negotiation process in order to justify itself. The opposition, unable or unwilling to delve into the real reasons for the defeat, puts forward the primitive and, in my opinion, an inaccurate version of “betraying” and “selling.”  Both, more or less successfully, play on people’s emotions.  Neither brings us closer to the truth.
