First, get rid of the burden of the past

October 30,2021 11:01

The opposition is planning a rally on November 9 with a well-known agenda – removal from power. The agenda, of course, is not original; all kinds of oppositionists have been holding rallies with such a demand since at least 1992. But the current situation has a certain peculiarity if we try to elaborate on that demand. Since there is no doubt that the opposition is in favor of the constitutional path, it must be assumed that “removal of power” means the resignation of the Prime Minister and the holding of snap elections. But wait, this year such a process has already taken place. Pashinyan resigned, snap elections were held, and as a result, the Civil Contract led by him received 54% of the citizens who participated in the elections – more than 680 thousand votes.

Did the citizens make the right choice? It seems to me not. They voted for the failed leader who brought disaster to our country. But let’s agree: it is impossible to form a government without elections. There is no other way to check what the majority of citizens want than to organize voting. And I can not help but conclude that the situation in Artsakh and Armenia in the areas of security, sovereignty, economy, public administration, education, culture, and many other areas is quite acceptable for those 680,000 people. Now what does the opposition offer to hold another election and make sure once again that the majority of citizens want to see Pashinyan as the country’s leader? Shall we hold elections every year?

It seems to me that the representatives of the Armenia alliance must show realism and pragmatism, and realize the bitter truth for themselves (no matter how difficult it may be). The current parliamentary opposition cannot dismiss Pashinyan. Why, I have my version. One of the main reasons is that the alliance is led by Robert Kocharyan, a politician with whom, as they say, there is a broad public consensus in terms of negative attitudes. Therefore, the force that expects success in the next regular or snap elections should not link its fate with the second president. Accordingly, Serzh Sargsyan’s move not to lead the I Have Honor alliance was the right decision, and I think it would be right for another RPA leader to be elected at the next congress of the RPA.

The ARF, which formed the core of the Armenia alliance, existed 100 years before Robert Kocharyan and will exist 100 years after Nikol Pashinyan. It is an ideology, a way of thinking of a part of our people, which is not close to my heart, but it must be represented in the political field. Nothing prevents the ARF from acting as an independent political force. There are other forces and figures in the parliament and outside the parliament who can realize their potential. The important thing is to get rid of the burden of previous presidents. Then just think about the election.
