“When Pashinyan says that it is Turkish land, the state retreats at the expense of the people’s security”: Political scientist

“Azerbaijan has set up customs points on Armenian soil. It means that Azerbaijan can create problems at any time, for example, for Iran-Armenia trade and for all the countries that use that road,” Vazgen Petrosyan, a political scientist and orientalist, said in a conversation with Aravot during the conference “Armenia-Turkey: Views from Within” organized by the People’s Movement of Armenia NGO at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences in reference to the illegal installation of Azerbaijani border and customs checkpoints on the Goris-Kapan interstate highway.

“That fact will also create security problems for our people and the villages near the road. In terms of security, we will be in a rather vulnerable position. If the Azerbaijanis want to destroy those roads, what will we be able to do? Nikol Pashinyan declares that it is Turkish land, it means that we are retreating nationally, and the state is retreating at the expense of the people’s security. It has never been Turkish land, except for a few years of the Soviet period,” said Vazgen Petrosyan.

According to him, the reason we are in this situation today is the ignorance of political power. “Ignorance manifested in the last ten years when we started to cease to be a political factor. We made ourselves a political object with our own hands, and we allowed the superpowers to play with us. Today we are not a factor, we are an instrument, and the superpowers trade with us.”
