The Union of Journalists of Armenia (UJA) is deeply concerned about the editorial which was released on the occasion of the anniversary of Istanbul’s Zhamanak Armenian Daily in the October 28 edition and which sounded the alarm about the fact that the editorial office of the newspaper edition is facing the risk of being shutdown.
The Union of Journalists of Armenia expresses its concern about this, adding that this is a deeply troubling phenomenon for the activities of all Armenian mass media outlets around the world.
There are many temporary hardships and challenges in our rapidly changing world, and especially now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We also learn from Istanbul’s Zhamanak Armenian Daily that the Armenians of Istanbul are in difficult situations, but this and the aforementioned are temporary hardships and should not become the reason for taking a permanent asset like the Zhamanak Armenian Daily from the Armenian reality, and indeed, the daily newspaper still has to continue to carry out its valuable mission for Diaspora Armenians.
We hope that circles of Armenian businessmen, public figures and benefactors of the Armenian Diaspora and Armenia will extend a helping hand and support Zhamanak Armenian Daily to overcome these hardships. What is also undisputed is the fact that the continuity and longevity of the daily newspaper needs to be guaranteed from the perspective of the formation of a healthy and comprehensive public opinion of all Armenians scattered across the globe.
It is not needless to state that Editor-in-Chief of Istanbul’s Zhamanak Armenian Daily Ara Gocunyan is a member of the Union of Journalists of Armenia, and the Union of Journalists of Armenia expresses solidarity with the editor and voices hope that the current issue will be solved soon and will be in favor of the future activities of the daily newspaper.
