A new saying in international relations

November 26,2021 10:44

“We want to normalize relations with Turkey, but we want to ask Azerbaijan and Turkey a question. Referring to Turkey, they say ‘one nation, two states.’ Do they want to destroy Armenia or not, do they want to destroy the Republic of Armenia or not, do they want to continue and finish the genocide of the Armenian people or not? If not, that is another question, if so, what is our choice?”

Nikol Pashinyan offers such a “road map” for the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. It is probably supposed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will send a letter to the Prime Minister of Armenia with the following content.

“Dear Prime Minister, in response to your question, I hereby assure you that Turkey does not want to destroy the state of Armenia, continue, or finish the genocide of the Armenian people. By the way, there was no genocide. I swear that we will no longer cause any harm to Armenia and the Armenian people.”

By the way, how did it happen that the Armenians, for example, in 1914 “did not get” that they should ask such a question to Enver or Talaat, maybe they would tell about their intentions? Or Molotov, could have asked when shaking Ribbentrop’s hand in 1939, right? “Tell me honestly, Joachim, are you going to attack the Soviet Union?”

Of course, such an approach is innovative in international relations, “unprecedented!” Instead of gathering and analyzing information about a country, its policies, or reaching a solution through negotiations, you just ask what it intends to do to the other person, and he tells you honestly. For example, I would ask Putin, “Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich, do you want there to be no state in the South Caucasus called Armenia?”

And the President of Russia would answer, “No, we do not need such a state. We need an area that will be inhabited by Armenians and that will be our ‘outpost’ in that region.” Biden can also be asked, “What do you think about the future of Armenia?” The US President will answer, “Wait, I will call my assistants, let them show me the place of Armenia on the map.”

That way, everyone’s intentions and ideas will become clear, and we will know what to do. There is only one problem here. Our leadership must also be honest about its intentions. Hey, that’s complicated. Not because they are secretive. No, the leaders of Armenia would be happy to say what they want to do. If they only knew.
