The “shepherd” allegory

December 02,2021 11:01

It turns out that the main newsmakers in Armenia are the “shepherds.” Moreover, it is not a specific shepherd with a name and surname, but the “shepherds” overall. The previous day, it was rumored that the Azeri soldiers had retreated from their post or positions near Ishkhanasar. Who said that? The mayor of Ishkhanasar. How does he know? The “shepherds” said so.  Throughout the day, we were content with that spin-off information in line with the weather of the day.

If it had been three years ago, Pashinyan would have immediately gone “live,” talked for 2 minutes about Ishkhanasar, for 18 minutes about the malicious “former regime,” from whom the people will definitely be freed of under his leadership. Or, he would mention the “withdrawal” of the Azerbaijanis as one of the 100 facts about Armenia. But the Prime Minister does not speak and I think he is right in this case.  It is obvious that the ministry that should provide official information on this issue is the Ministry of Defense. But no explanation was given from there, and the only official from whom it is possible to ask for a comment is the NA Defense and Security Andranik Kocharyan. The latter has one universal answer to all difficult questions: “Ask Robert Kocharyan about it.” In principle, naming a “anti-hero” (second president) with a negative public perception is often a rhetorical ploy, but it does not increase our awareness of Ishkhanasar’s problem. To be fair, it is not the MP who should inform the public about this issue, but, as I have already said, the executive power is silent.

Heavy negotiations are currently underway in Moscow between the Deputy Prime Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan. I am sure we will not receive any clear official information about their essence and results. The press release, I suppose, will say “the parties agreed to continue their efforts” and such empty formulations. 2-3 days later, any Azeri official or government spokesperson (and all the mainstream media outlets are such speakers) will announce that the Armenians have recognized the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the status of Artsakh within that state. Officially, no one will deny these allegations. Or maybe some “shepherd” living in Moscow will tell us good news.

To be honest, I see a deep meaning in the allegory of the “shepherd.” Because the “shepherds” we are talking about here put their flock in the place of the animals they imagine.
