Did you find out if the captives forgave you?: Eduard Aghajanyan on pardoning prisoners and forgiving Civil Contract for staying in Baku prisons for 1-2 months

December 11,2021 14:00
  1. A motion has been submitted to detain 5 prisoners that were returned to Armenia from Baku prisons. In this regard, on December 10, Eduard Aghajanyan, Chair of the NA Committee on Foreign Relations, in a conversation with journalists, answered that he could not give an assessment, and it is about regulations, so there are specific bodies to take into account psychological and other circumstances in response to the question of whether one should not wait for all the prisoners to return, analyze the circumstances of their captivity, and then detain them. “Under no circumstances can it go against the RA legislation.”

In response to our question of why no general was arrested due to the same circumstances, yet prisoners were arrested, Aghajanyan answered, “It should be noted that many people, including the military, are currently involved in criminal cases, and therefore, to insist that the military, who allegedly had their share of responsibility, not involved in criminal cases, does not correspond to reality.” We clarified which general was he referring to who was arrested, and Aghajanyan urged us to find out from the prosecutor’s office and if it is subject to publication, they will inform us. “I do not know personally.”

Speaking about the controversial statement of the NA Speaker Alen Simonyan and the connection between the arrest of the captives, Aghajanyan said,  “Criminal cases related to the captivity episodes can not and have never been conditioned by the ideas and beliefs of any Armenian politician. The fact that this has been talked about for the last week or two is due only to the fact that the Prime Minister first started talking about it and then in the general public. This is a delicate topic and we should speak carefully, but in the past, when the captives returned to Armenia, they all went through the same procedure and if there are culprits, they were held accountable. If there are no culprits, they did not obey. The relevant bodies related to the captives who have already returned to Armenia are already conducting an investigation to find out under what conditions they found themselves in captivity.”

Aghajanyan responded to the observation that there had been no case before where captives had been arrested after returning. “So there was no reason for them to be arrested, or maybe the court did not satisfy the motion. I do not know.” During the NA election campaign, Nikol Pashinyan announced, “The captives will forgive us for being held captive for another 1-2 months.”

Thus, the journalists asked if he found out if the captives forgave them, Aghajanyan answered. “I do not think this is a serious issue. I see this as rhetorical.” When asked if Nikol Pashinyan was giving a rhetorical speech, Aghajanyan answered. “This is not a serious issue raised by a journalist.”
