Are Artsakh and Armenia on the brink of a new war?: Davit Babayan’s response to Aliyev’s latest statements

January 19,2022 16:55

During a meeting with journalists, answering the question regarding the President of Azerbaijan’s announcements about the possible start of a war, in the context that provocations are carried out on the line of contact almost on a daily basis, Davit Babayan said,

“A new war may break out. No one can guarantee the full possibility of resuming the war; it is impossible to guarantee. But is there a possibility that a new war will start? In this context, that possibility is very low. Why? A formal, large-scale attack on Armenia- and I do not mean the various provocations by Azerbaijan on the border with Armenia- will mean an attack on the CSTO, which can not go unnoticed. We saw similar developments in Kazakhstan and the first reaction of the CSTO. It would mean that an attack on Armenia would be an attack on the CSTO, and in the extreme case, on Russia, especially if Turkey joins that aggression. This is about Armenia. As for Artsakh, as you know, peace and stability are maintained here, including by Russian peacekeepers. In other words, an attack on Artsakh will automatically mean an attack on Russian peacekeepers and Russia. In this context, it will be a war of a different nature. It will not be a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan or Azerbaijan and Artsakh. I do not think that Azerbaijan does not understand all this. Therefore, at this stage, I think the possibility of a large-scale war is very unlikely.”
