“Hye Dat (the Armenian Cause) has never been part of Armenian policy”: Pashinyan recalls Kocharyan’s statement that he has no territorial claims from Turkey

Touching upon relations with Turkey at an online press conference on Monday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that after the first meeting of special envoys Serdar Kılıç and Ruben Rubinyan, if this tendency persists, it is very likely that Armenia will accept the invitation to participate in the Antalya Diplomatic Forum.

In response to the question about whether the Zurich talks failed because Turkey put forward preconditions, and what the likelihood is that Turkey will not put forward preconditions this time as well, Pashinyan answered, “I cannot guarantee that such a thing will not happen, but we must also understand how much the parties are interested. In fact, the very first stage of the political negotiations is transparent; this has never happened before.”

As far as if it is possible for Armenia to give up the Armenian Cause (Hye Dat) and pan-Armenian agendas, Pashinyan answered, “These questions are strange because Hye Dat (the Armenian Cause) has never been part of Armenian policy. Moreover, for example, in 2005, Robert Kocharyan publicly stated that Armenia has no territorial claims from Turkey. In fact, Serzh Sargsyan also referred to this statement. Armenia has never questioned the Armenia-Turkey border. You will not find any leader of the Republic of Armenia who has questioned that border.”

As for the recognition of the genocide, Pashinyan said that they expressed their position through the government’s program. “Finally, we must admit that the driving force of the genocide recognition process has always been the Diaspora and Diaspora organizations.”
