On January 27, Aravot.am reminded Eduard Aghajanyan, a member of the National Assembly and chair of the NA Foreign Relations Committee,
of the thoughts expressed by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the recent press conference: “Armenia has never pursued a policy of the Armenian Cause․․․ In the end, we must admit that the driving force of the Genocide recognition process has always been the Diaspora and Diaspora organizations.”
Aravot was interested. “For what purpose and on what grounds does your government claim that only the Diaspora was the driving force of the genocide recognition process? And if you think that the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide is exclusively the achievement of the Diaspora, then on what grounds do you attribute the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the dozens of countries and international organizations in the last 15 years exclusively to the Diaspora and not to the Armenia-Diaspora partnership? Does this mean that by attributing the process to the Diaspora, your government gets rid of the further process of international recognition of the genocide?”

Eduard Aghajanyan answered, “The question has a very simple and clear answer. All the authorities in the history of newly independent Armenia were in favor of normalization of relations with Turkey without preconditions. Consequently, the issue of the Armenian Genocide has never been considered as a precondition for normalization of relations with Turkey during all the Armenian authorities. In that context, I share the positions of the Prime Minister and I am sure that he meant this context. It is not a question of attributing the process only to the whole Diaspora. It is clear that the role of the Diaspora has been more effective than that of Armenia as a state, taking into account the fact that the issue of recognizing the Armenian Genocide was not a precondition for normalization of relations with Turkey.”
