In a briefing with journalists after the government session on February 3, Vahagn Khachaturyan answered the question about the border situation regarding whether he thinks that the enemy is in our sovereign territory. “No. The area where they are deployed is ours for now. And when that issue is discussed and we come to an agreement with them, I am sure that they will not be in that territory. They will not be in our sovereign territory.”
Responding to the journalist’s observation on how he assesses the appointment of ambassadors with no diplomatic experience and, for example, according to the press, Pashinyan’s intention to appoint Nairi Sargsyan as Ambassador to Canada in the near future, Khachaturyan said, “I think they are doing the right thing, because many of the ambassadors with experience of those years are not engaged in serving the state interests, but they solve other problems. There are ambassadors who serve in the given country, then do not return, and become citizens of that country.”
According to Vahagn Khachaturyan, the line drawn by the diplomats should be the servant of the political program and policy of the given country, and not the implementation of their personal political approaches in the given country. “Many of our diplomats were engaged in that, and it is unacceptable. Now I am a member of the government and I go out, I don’t know what to say to the government. There is a way to do that: you write an application, go out, and speak, and the same should happen in diplomacy.”

Regarding the appointment of Lilit Makunts as Armenia’s ambassador to the United States, Khachaturyan said it was the correct decision. “She is a member of the political team and feels responsible for the political line of the country. She will represent the interests of Armenia in the United States as it is in Armenia, and will not go and say, I am Lilit Makunts, Nikol Pashinyan said this on this issue, but this is what I think. That is unacceptable.”
