“Disgraceful processes are taking place in Armenia, in connection with which European structures are showing unacceptable silence,” human rights activist Ruben Melikyan said during a protest rally in front of the EU delegation in Armenia on February 10. Dozens of citizens, public, and political figures handed a demand to the EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin via the employee who approached them, pointing out that the government violates democracy, freedom of speech, and the work of the media, and people and judges are under political pressure.
“This silence is one of the reasons for the suppression of freedom of speech, independence of the judiciary, local self-government, and the independence of the media. These people, who are the EU representatives in Armenia, have a share of guilt and responsibility. We find that these people do not really represent European values, but are engaged in PR of the ruling political force. The reasons are different, for example, they have certain expectations in the political sphere, but more importantly, their silence is mostly conditioned by not transmitting proper information to the capitals of European countries. It is impossible to have such an attitude in such conditions,” said Ruben Melikyan.
