“If Russia’s economy catches a slight cold, Armenia’s economy gets sick”: Political scientist

February 24,2022 13:03

“It is obvious that the Russian-Ukrainian crisis will have a serious impact on Armenia and it will be in several directions,” said political scientist Armen Vardanyan during a discussion at the Media Center, talking about the possible consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on the region and in particular, on Armenia.

“The first impact will be in economic terms. Armenia’s economy is closely connected with Russia’s economy. Russia is Armenia’s number one trading partner and our number one place of export. Therefore, weakening and paralyzing the Russian economy will definitely affect the Armenian economy. Figuratively speaking, if the Russian economy catches a slight cold, the Armenian economy gets sick, because our country’s economy is quite dependent on the Russian economy. Remittances from Russia to Armenia will decrease because the Russian ruble is rapidly falling and experiencing a daily decline. So, Armenia will also feel the consequences of sanctions against Russia,” the political scientist added. According to Armen Vardanyan, it is possible that we also have certain problems in terms of security.

“If Russia weakens a lot during the confrontation with the West, it is not ruled out that Azerbaijan will take advantage of the situation and provoke new provocations in Artsakh, even provoking a new war.”
