Marina Kaljurand, a member of the European Parliament and Co-Chair of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, urged Armenia to stand by Ukraine during a briefing in the RA National Assembly on February 24. In response to the journalists’ reminder that Russia is a strategic ally of Armenia, Kaljurand clarified, “It is up to your government to decide what they will do and how they will do it. I can only call on them to stand by and support Ukraine.”
The official stressed, “I will not interfere in the internal affairs of Armenia. It is true that everything is in your hands, but even people can express their support. In our country, Estonia, for example, people marched with Ukrainian flags. I can say that the European Union stands by Ukraine, and within the framework of the Euronest meetings on Monday, a statement was adopted by the Bureau, by which we supported the autonomy and independence of Ukraine.”
The journalists also recalled Kaljurand’s statement made a year ago, in which she wished the people of Artsakh peace. In response, Marina Kaljurand reaffirmed her position. “I myself am a former diplomat, I was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I believe in diplomacy. I believe that everyone has the right to peace and prosperity, and that it can be achieved through diplomacy. I really regret every loss of life, every suffering of every family, and I believe that there will be lasting peace under the co-chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk Group. That is the only way to achieve lasting peace.”
