“We support the processes aimed at democratization of the Republic of Armenia. Armenia continues to be an important partner for the European Union,” said Marina Kaljurand, a member of the European Parliament and Co-Chair of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, at a briefing with journalists in the National Assembly on February 24.
“We will continue to support the reforms of the Republic of Armenia as long as the Republic of Armenia is ready,” she stressed. The journalists inquired why the EU does not respond to the steps against democracy in Armenia and to the restrictions on the rights of journalists.
Marina Kaljurand answered, “Yes, we appreciate the democratic reforms being carried out in Armenia, but nothing is perfect, there are no perfect countries. We had discussions with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and talked about the constitutional reforms, the sphere of justice, and the criminalization of insults. Yes, we receive good information from the EU delegation in Armenia. We also met with the civil society and the ARF. We are not silent. We have not come to teach you anything. We are here as your friends. If necessary, we will raise issues, we will talk about minorities. At the same time, let us accept that there is progress. We promised the Prime Minister that we will provide the best experience of our countries, and he promised to consider it.”
