“People lived well, they wanted to get a little better again, it got worse”: Refugee from Hadrut

March 05,2022 17:01

In the morning, men from Hadrut gather at the Stepan Shahumyan Park in Stepanakert to talk, to come to their senses, and to discuss what to do next. After the 44-day war, Hadrut came under the control of the enemy, and many of the people of Hadrut found shelter in Stepanakert. They rent in Stepanakert.

They are not in a rush to move. It is difficult: they have no home, no job, no work to do, and the future is uncertain, but they are waiting.

“People lived well, and they wanted to get a little better again, but it got worse. Nothing good is expected from now on,” said my elderly interlocutor in despair, noting that their generation did what it had to do: fight and win so that their children and grandchildren could enjoy the joy of living in peace and victory, but they did not use it. In any case, they are not going to leave Artsakh.

At the Freedom Fighters’ Park in Stepanakert, the laughter of those who went for a walk has decreased, and the children are walking silently through the park.

There are now posters with pictures of the victims of the 44-day war. People come to “visit” their relatives and acquaintances, bring flowers, and light candles in front of their pictures. But one thing is for sure, “Artsakh is the beating heart of the Armenians” and not only on the poster.
