“I am dismayed by the 13-year prison sentence requested today by the Russian prosecutor’s office against Alexey Navalny on charges of ‘fraud’ and ‘insulting a court’,” Jacques Maire (France, ALDE), PACE rapporteur on Navalny’s poisoning, said today.
“This request comes in the context of the trial he has been undergoing since mid-February in his prison colony, where he is already serving a prison sentence contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights,” he said.
“I call on the Russian authorities to immediately release Mr Navalny under the interim measure indicated by the European Court of Human Rights in 2021, to respect his rights under the European Convention, and to end all persecution against him.”
