During my tenure, there was no demand to lower the bar on the status of Artsakh: Ara Ayvazyan

“During my tenure, there was no demand to lower the bar on the status of Artsakh. If we act sensibly, we can provide the minimum,” former Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan told reporters on April 19 on Freedom Square. He came to meet with the head of the I Have Honor faction Artur Vanetsyan.

According to him, there was no such question in his tenure. “If you remember, there were several statements by the co-chairs. In particular, I will remind you of December 3 and April 13. There, I think the emphasis they made is fully in line with our national and state interests.”

The former minister expressed confidence that through diplomacy we can turn our backs and ensure our national and state interests. “I do not want to give an assessment now, but it seems to me that a lot of work has been done, and we have provided some emphasis by the international community,” said Ara Ayvazyan, noting that during his tenure the Armenian rhetoric and targets were different, but he cannot say what happened this year.

“But if we analyze that the process did not end with the war, if we see what is happening around us, then we understand that the dust that has risen after the war implies that the processes continue, and geopolitical processes are taking place. And this is not only in the Armenia-Azerbaijan axis, this is much more serious. It may seem that Armenia is the weakest country in the South Caucasus, but a lot depends on Armenia’s position as far as what the geopolitical weather in the region will be like in the future. I tried to make you understand.”

Touching upon the 5 demands put forward by Azerbaijan, Ara Ayvazyan said that the demand of Azerbaijan first of all refers to the recognition of its territorial integrity. “And why do not we ask the same question to the President of Azerbaijan – does he recognize the territorial integrity of Armenia? If so, he must withdraw his troops as soon as possible.”

Ara Ayvazyan also said that he had expressed his negative opinion on delimitation and demarcation to Nikol Pashinyan and resigned hours later.
