29 April, 2022, Yerevan, Armenia – In the run up to the Regional Conference for Europe of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a preparatory meeting was held between representatives of FAO and Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

The 33rd FAO Regional Conference for Europe will take place from 10 to 13 May 2022 in Łódź, Poland. The Regional Conference is FAO’s highest governing body in Europe and Central Asia, where countries of the region will discuss matters affecting world food security and agriculture, including a surge in global food prices, and share approaches for transforming agrifood systems in Europe and Central Asia and ensuring sustainable food value chains.

Tigran Gabrielyan, Deputy Minister of Economy of Armenia and Lianna Mkrtchyan, First Secretary, Department of Multilateral Policy and Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will attend the Conference as part of the delegation of the Government of Armenia. Today, during the meeting with Raimund Jehle, FAO Representative in Armenia and Gayane Nasoyan, Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia, they discussed the details related to the Conference agenda and the priority areas for Armenia, and were provided with specific briefing on the Conference.

At the United Nations Food Systems Summit in September 2021, FAO Member Nations – including Armenia – agreed on the FAO Strategic Framework for 2022–31 that articulates the Organization’s vision for a sustainable and food-secure world for all. The Strategic Framework, which strives for better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life, will facilitate future achievements under the umbrella of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Debate at the ministerial round table will focus on the challenges in the region stemming from the war in Ukraine and its impact regionally and globally on food security, and identifying priority issues in the Europe and Central Asia region for gaining the optimal balance among agrifood systems, the environment and the use of natural resources. Member Nations will be invited to illustrate their priorities and ongoing actions to transform agrifood systems.

The Deputy Minister of Economy emphasised the challenges for Armenia caused by the recent international developments. He also mentioned about the work done by the Ministry in the area of livestock production, emphasizing particularly the inventory of the cattle. The Deputy Minister attached high importance to FAO’s support to the Government of Armenia. Speaking about the urgent need for preventing brucellosis disease among animals, he referred to the successful projects previously supported by FAO as a good basis to build on further partnership in tackling the issue.”

By working together with governments, partners and communities, FAO is in a unique position to support Members in building more resilient and food-secure futures by supporting prevention, preparedness and rehabilitation for sustainable development, and helping farmers and rural economies become more agile, efficient and innovative.
