Aravot asked the Human Rights Defender, Christine Grigoryan, whether the Human Rights Defender was discussing the issue of removing the Azeri bases from the territory of the Republic of Armenia with the authorities of the Republic of Armenia. Former Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan said during a meeting with citizens in Saryan Park on April 30 that during his tenure, the Human Rights Defender was creating evidence to expel Azeris from areas close to Armenian villages, as required by international requirements.
The Armenian authorities said there was nothing we could do. On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Defender organized a “Question and Answer” meeting with journalists, in response she said. “The results of the fact-finding mission carried out by the Defender’s Office, including those that substantiated the approach of creating a security zone on the line of contact, were presented to various international bodies by Mr. Tatoyan.
This approach was reflected in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in January in the relevant resolution adopted. This communication has also been submitted to the government, in this regard there has been cooperation in the past, and now there is with the office of the government’s representative in international legal instances.”
Christine Grigoryan said that she supported this approach both during her election and in office, and presented those approaches during international contacts, citing those facts and evidence. According to her, the most important thing is to guarantee the implementation of all the rights of the people living in the border communities near the line of contact. “The starting point is that whatever decision is made, whether it is an intermediate solution, the main solution, or demarcation and delimitation, both during the process and as a result, the guarantees of the security of the rights of the people living in that area must be guaranteed.”
