Let the respectable opposition not be offended by me but people I meet in the streets mainly complain about the protesters and some call them “supporters of Kocharyan”. Today a woman said to me, repeating the same complaints, that they pray
that God will grant Pashinyan wisdom so that he can take the country out of this situation.
In general, I can record that people that I met in the streets cursed the leaders of Armenia until 2018. I remember that one of the taxi drivers refused to take me to the Northern Avenue saying, “I respect you so much but I’m not going to drive to the Karabakh lair. And the attitude towards the first person of the country, at least from my experience, is positive now. I have heard “what the poor guy should have done” (or more rude words) expression.
Of course, this is not a sociological query, but on the other hand, it cannot happen that I have met specially selected people in 30 years who represent guided views. You may argue that these people may be affected by the propaganda of Public TV. But I can answer that Public TV represented the activities of Serzh Sargsyan positively as well, but nobody believed that. Moreover, during the rule of the last leader, there were no oppositional TV channels. So propaganda has nothing to do with this. We will analyze for a long time why most Armenians love the failed, defeated leader. But the protesters who organize the rallies should realize the reality and not live under the illusions that “the people have raised”.
Citizens also ask me, “Nikol won’t let them come, right?” To tell you the truth, I don’t take the functions of giving hope or disappointing someone. But I truly believe that the change of government won’t happen through these rallies. This doesn’t mean that Pashinyan’s government is eternal. A change of power will take place when the current government won’t be needed by anyone – neither the West nor Russia (it’s obvious that both of them need him that’s why they support him). Pashinyan won’t be needed when he takes the expected steps in relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. But I’m afraid that will put Armenia in a worse situation than it is today. In that case, the lost people may understand that they were wrong.
