Why won’t the June 3 special session take place?

May 28,2022 12:47

A special session is scheduled for June 3, which was demanded by the two opposition factions. Commenting on that demand, the National Assembly Deputy Speaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan stated, “Either they (that is, the Civil Contract members – AA) will come to the National Assembly and substantiate that Artsakh must remain part of Azerbaijan, or they will come and sign that statement.” This is about the statement spread by the intellectuals, according to which Artsakh can not be part of Azerbaijan.

As expected, the Civil Contract will overthrow that session. If the authorities were honest with their opponents and citizens, they would really come and try to justify why they do not see any other option but to leave Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan. But since the Civil Contract members do not have enough courage for that, and they do not actually want to say neither “yes” nor “no,” but take the conversation in other directions they like: 1) you robbed, 2) you handed over Karabakh to Azerbaijan during the talks, 3) the people rejected you and are rejecting you. No matter how true or false these statements are, they remove them from the main subject and, on the contrary, exacerbate the controversy.

It is not difficult to guess who benefits from the scandals that cause further hostility and polarization. Moreover, it is easy to notice that the President of Azerbaijan Aliyev is trying to inflame our internal contradictions with his statements. Not taking into account the political and even formal logic, he states that the joint work of the Armenian and Azerbaijani commissions on the issue of “demarcation” means that the issue of the status of Nagorno Karabakh is already closed. Thus, he gives the opposition an opportunity to say, “Hey, you see, they have already agreed on that issue,” thus exacerbating the already tense situation.

And again, I think it is more desirable for the contacts between the government and the opposition to be more constructive. Of course, this does not mean that they should back down from their fundamental contradictions, nor should the opposition give up its street actions (if it deems them effective). But, I think, the basis, the starting point or, if you want, the main message addressed to our society and the world should be: “We were all elected by the citizens of Armenia.”
