“Unsupervised operation of laboratories poses risks for the spread of new virus strains and epidemics”: Speech of the Speaker of the Russian State Duma in Yerevan

June 07,2022 13:44

On June 6, the sitting of the CSTO Assembly Council was held in Yerevan.

Chairman of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, Chairman of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin, referring to the importance of the CSTO security functions, expressed an opinion that the effectiveness of the organization was proven by the peacekeeping operation in Kazakhstan in January 2022, which was attended by units of all CSTO member states.

“It allowed the law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan to concentrate their efforts to restore law enforcement and neutralize security challenges. Based on this experience, work should be done to improve the CSTO peacekeeping mission. The issue of legislative provision of such activities is included in today’s agenda.”

Volodin stressed that the CSTO member states pursue the policy of sovereign states in the interests of their own citizens, which is not to the liking of those who support the monolithic model of the world. “The pressure from Washington and Brussels will increase. Illegal sanctions and international interference, especially during elections, are a challenge we have already faced. We are talking about all CSTO countries. We must defend our sovereignty and independence.”

Vyacheslav Volodin said that they will also discuss issues of improving the legislative regulations guaranteeing the sovereignty of the CSTO member states. The issue of biological security in the Eurasian region is also a topic of discussion. “The laboratory set up by Washington in Ukraine did not have sufficient standards of protection. Washington’s military-biological presence in Ukraine threatens the health and life of the people of other countries. The unsupervised operation of such laboratories poses risks for the spread of new virus strains and epidemics; there are no drugs or vaccines against them.”

The head of the Russian State Duma expressed doubts that if the cases of “monkeypox” infections in Europe, Canada, and Australia are connected with American biological laboratories, then who will be responsible for the consequences? “Our work must be coordinated with intergovernmental agreements in order to effectively respond to biological threats. Life has shown that today we can rely on friendly relations, which are tested by time. It is possible to come up with a common position at the international level.”
