“In January 2021, the CSTO responded to the events in Kazakhstan by sending troops, but the issue of the incursion of Azerbaijani troops into the sovereign territory of Armenia in May 2021 remains open,” Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan told reporters after a meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers in Yerevan on June 10. He recalled that the trends of developments in the spheres of international and regional security were first discussed in a narrow format, then in an expanded format, and referred to the improvement of the CSTO crisis response mechanisms.
According to the RA Foreign Minister, this issue is the priority of the Armenian presidency. He added that Armenia has remained committed to active, proactive cooperation within the CSTO, strengthening cooperation between member states, developing foreign policy coordination within the organization, and increasing the CSTO role in the international arena.
CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas noted that one of the most important issues discussed was the CSTO crisis response. According to him, the experience gained during the peacekeeping operation in Kazakhstan was a good basis for further steps to improve the crisis response system of the organization. “I have spoken about the work already started in the CSTO. We intend to work out a number of documents within a month. We are clarifying our legislative framework, the system of control bodies and troops,” said Stanislav Zas.
