“The issues of demography will not be solved only by increasing the birth rate or reducing the death rate”: Aram Bekchyan

July 09,2022 18:15

Aram Bekchyan, co-founder of the Future Armenian initiative, addressed the problems of demography and population growth within the framework of the Future Armenian forum. Referring to 1970 statistics, he said that 2,400,000 people lived in Armenia in that year. Today, together with Artsakh, the population is slightly more than 3 million. According to Aram Bekchyan, compared to 1990, we have about 10 percent population growth, so we need to understand the essence of this problem.

“The issues of demography will not be solved only by increasing the birth rate or reducing the death rate. It has a number of aspects: human welfare, education, fertility promotion, etc. And it is not only the problem of the government, but of our entire society. Society should understand how important these issues are for the future of our nation.” He said that he was very impressed by the meeting with young people from Artsakh, but Aram Bekchyan was saddened when he saw the people of Artsakh feeling very sad and abandoned. “The people felt very abandoned. It depends on us, our people, and the government, how we can change and improve these feelings.”

He considered it important when Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan and former President Bako Sahakyan were at the same table discussing the issues. “I was very pleased that the old and new government were sitting at the same table, which you can’t say in the case of Armenia, so that we become united and solve those difficult issues.”
