“I very much welcome the ratification by the United Kingdom of the Istanbul Convention, a Council of Europe treaty which is of tremendous importance for those who suffer from violence against women and domestic violence in all our member States. The United Kingdom becomes thus the 37th State to ratify this Convention, and I hope that its reservation with regard to article 59 will be lifted as soon as possible.”
The United Kingdom’s ratification follows the recent inspiring ratification of the Convention by Ukraine. President Kox hopes that those States that did not yet ratify will be encouraged by the decisions of Ukraine and the United Kingdom: “The gold standard set by the Istanbul Convention deserves to be respected and supported by all Council of Europe member States, as well as all other States that want to combat violence against women and domestic violence”.
