Explosion with fire in “Surmalu” shopping center: firefighting and search activities continue

On August 14, at 13։23 an emergency call was received to Crisis Management National Center that explosion had occurred in “Surmalu” shopping center.

By “N 2” call of the fire complexity six fire units and one autoladder from the Fire and Rescue Squads of Yerevan Rescue Department, the operative group from Crisis Management National Center, the rescue group and the canine unit from the Center for Carrying out Activities of Special Importance of the Rescue Forces Department, groups on duty from Medical Care Provision Department and Management Division for Firefighting and Rescue Activities, the psychologist on duty from Psychological Assistance Division and gas-smoke protection service vehicle of the Rescue Service of the MES of RA dispatched to the scene.

“N 3” call of the fire complexity was announced and four more fire units from the Fire and Rescue Squads of Yerevan and Regional Rescue Departments of the Rescue Service of the MES of RA left for the scene.

It turned out that explosion with fire and collapse occurred: three-storey building partially collapsed and the wreckage covers 8000-9000 square meters area.

The firefighting activities was supervised by the Minister of ES Armen Pambukhchyan: the Director of Rescue Service r/s colonel Armen Gasparyan, the Deputies of ES Minister and Director of Rescue Service and management of MES and Rescue Service were at the scene.

The firefighting activities were carried out at six sites: 14 water tanks, 8 trucks, three tractors and 2 cranes of the Yerevan Municipality were involved in the firefighting activities.

The casualties were transferred to “Armenia” RMC, “Shengavit”, “Surb Astvatsamayr”, “Erebouni”, “Izmirlyan” medical centers and “Heratsi” N 1 hospital complex.

An enhanced service was being carried out in Yerevan and Regional Rescue Departments: 350 rescuers were involved in the firefighting activities.

By 23:00 28 citizens were discharged and 28 were receiving treatment.

The rescuers pulled 10 casualties, five dead bodies and 21 vehicles out of the wreckage: the firefighting and search activities continue: about 150 volunteers participate in the activities.

On August 15 by 00:25, 185 rescuers participated in the firefighting and search activities, 20 water tanks, 12 trucks, 5 tractors, 3 cranes and 7 additional equipment of Yerevan Municipality were involved.

There are 6 victims – Misak Margaryan, Anahit Mkhitaryan, Jemma Nazaryan, Anahit Khalatyan, Vardan Kocharyan and Gayane Avetisyan.

Urban Search and Rescue teams of Shirak and Tavush provinces left for the scene.
