“What happened has nothing to do with a terrorist act”: Tigran Avinyan visited the scene as a mayoral candidate

August 17,2022 15:23

Tigran Avinyan, a member of the board of the Civil Contract party, visited the territory of the Surmalu Shopping Center on Wednesday. He confirmed in a conversation with journalists that he visited the area as a candidate for mayor of Yerevan to be nominated by the Civil Contract party.

He reminded that in 2021, the government adopted a project that almost limited the use of fireworks during private events, allowing them only during state and community holidays. “This is sobering to some extent, but we ourselves should be able to refuse fireworks on our own because it disturbs the peace of the residents and it is dangerous. We have to realize that our private events are not necessarily attended by residents ten kilometers away. There are old people, children, and those explosions, which happen even before 11:00 p.m., disturb people’s peace. It’s time to take some tough steps, to ban it in a radical way.”

Avinyan said that there were discussions about the project in the National Assembly in 2021. There is a large business sector that is interconnected with this type of work, so we should listen to them as well. “Discussions were delayed at that time. We have spoken with MP Sisak Gabrielyan, who is the co-author of the project, and the issue will be discussed as an emergency at the session to be convened in September.”

He also ruled out that what happened in the Surmalu area was a terrorist act. “In my subjective opinion, it has nothing to do with a terrorist act. Storage of about 4 tons of fireworks in one place…  one small spark can lead to such a consequence.”
