“It is obvious that Russia is jealous of the strengthening of the positions of other players in the process of the Karabakh conflict. It has done everything to push the Western co-chairs out of the process and keep the conflict entirely in its hands,” said political scientist Armen Vardanyan in a conversation with Aravot.am regarding official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova’s statement that Brussels’ moves in the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations are pseudo-initiatives.
Zakharova answered the question at the briefing today about the expectations from the meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Brussels. She said, “In our opinion, they have nothing to do with the real desire to contribute to the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. I would even say that they are pseudo-initiatives of Europeans.
They are more like casually seizing the laurels of mediation, with nothing underneath. We, as mediators, work, and this work leads to concrete results and appropriate assessments of the parties. And those who put themselves in the place of a mediator, not being such, they are not able to offer anything, but there is a desire to show involvement here as well. It seems that Brussels has lost the skills of dialogues altogether.”

According to Armen Vardanyan, it is no coincidence that months ago, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov announced in Baku that the Minsk Group does not exist, and the conflict should be resolved only on the basis of the statement of November 9, 2020. “That is, they have always wanted the conflict to be completely in their hands, to put pressure on the parties of the conflict as they wish. Until now, such scenes of jealousy were created through the lips of pro-Kremlin experts, now they are already officially speaking through the lips of Maria Zakharova.”
