Goris-Stepanakert temporary road to Artsakh: The peacekeepers greet the Armenian vehicles “with congratulations”

September 03,2022 16:20

“The Lachin Corridor is completely closed for you, a separate, new road has been opened.” For several days now, Russian peacekeepers have been greeting the passengers of Armenian cars leaving Armenia for Artsakh with such “congratulations” and informing them that they will show the further course of the road at the next checkpoints. The Lachin Corridor has been closed for Armenian parties since August 30 of this year. As a result, three more Armenian settlements, the city of Berdzor, the villages of Aghavno and Sus, were also handed over to Azerbaijan.

The Armenia-Artsakh route will be organized by a temporary road that passes through the villages of Berdadzor sub-district of Shushi district, bypassing Berdzor and Aghavno. This is a temporary solution until the construction of the main road, the part of which passes through Artsakh, is completed by Azerbaijan in July. The Armenian side started the construction of the road to be built at the beginning of August and plans to finish it in the spring of next year. Both the temporary and the main road will be monitored by Russian peacekeepers. Eight to nine support posts have already been installed on the 4.7-kilometer section of the temporary road.

The temporary section of the new route connecting Artsakh to Armenia is completely asphalted.

On August 29, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Artsakh announced that on August 30, from 20:00, the connection with the Republic of Armenia will be made through a new route through the area of Hin Shen-Mets Shen villages of Berdadzor sub-district.

The message of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was preceded by the meeting of the Security Council of the Republic of Artsakh, during which the decision was made to operate the temporary road from August 30, although it was previously announced that the operation of the new road will be from September 1. Active construction works are still underway in the area of the road.

They are carried out by the Azerbaijani side under the supervision of Russian peacekeepers. The road connecting the villages of Sus and Aghavno is also being built. The road is jointly usable for Armenian and Azerbaijani cars. In some sections, peacekeepers regulate the movement of cars. A special bridge was built in one section so that the roads of Armenian and Azerbaijani vehicles would not cross.
