In his article, the editor of the German “Neues Deutschland” daily newspaper, Peter Steiniger, criticizes the EU policy of “velvet gloves” towards the aggressor Azerbaijan against the background of a new attack on the sovereign territory of Armenia.
He specifically writes:
“In order to escalate tensions somehow Azerbaijan has deliberately pulled the military card again through attacks in the border area with Armenia. The exemplary is the action of the brother and NATO state Turkey in northern Syria. Baku wishes to seize the opportunity and execute further offences after occupying large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh two years ago.
Moscow is not keen on an alliance collapse. Particularly since the Russians are in deals with all parties in the region. Azerbaijan’s autocratic ruler has zero worries about the West anyhow. The appeals from Brussels for a ceasefire and diplomatic negotiations sound dutiful and are vaguely addressed. This aggressor can continue to count on being treated with “velvet gloves”. After all, the EU – human rights rhetoric aside – has just agreed to expand gas supplies with the oligarchs of Baku. Such values come first. The EU sanctions policy against Russia does not make this more credible”.
